Biography
Paolo Pellegrin has travelled to some of the Earth’s harshest and most extreme environments, to bring back photographs which speak to a profound communality of human experience. He was born in 1964 in Rome and initially studied architecture at l'Università la Sapienza, Rome before pursuing his studies in photography at the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia. Between 1991 and 2001, Pellegrin was represented by the Parisian photography agency, Agence VU. In 2001, he was nominated to become a member of Magnum Photos and in 2005 became a full member. He was a contract photographer for Newsweek for ten years.
In his career as a photojournalist, Pellegrin has been awarded many prizes including ten World Press Photo awards and numerous Photographer of the Year awards, a Leica Medal of Excellence, an Olivier Rebbot Award, the Hansel-Meith Preis, and the Robert Capa Gold Medal Award. In 2006, he was assigned the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography.
