The Michael Hoppen Gallery is delighted to exhibit twentieth century photographic masters from both Japan and Latin America at the Armory 2016.
Firstly a rare selection of vintage prints by Eikoh Hosoe. In 1961 the great Japanese writer, Yukio Mishima, asked Hosoe to photograph him, giving him full artistic direction in making the surreal series ‘Ba-ra-kei’ (Ordeal by Roses). We will also show a selection of rare and completely unseen photographs from Hibi by the artist Masahisa Fukase. Known for his seminal books Ravens and Bukubuku, Fukase made a series of studies of cracked pavements (Hibi) in Tokyo (1990). Mack Books will publish Hibi in April 2016. In addition a rare selection of vintage works by Ishiuchi Miyako whose exhibition has just opened at the Getty Museum in LA. Series will include Yokosuka Story (1976-1977), Apartment (1978).
From Latin America we will be exhibiting rare vintage works by Kati Horna and Horaccio Coppola. Kati Horna’s work was “rediscovered” during the Jeu de Paume retrospective of her work in 2013. Focusing upon the images she made in Mexico after WWII we will show a selection of surrealist and theatrical works demonstrating the crucial role she played as part of the 1960’s Mexican avant-garde.
Horacio Coppola was an Argentinian photographer and his experimental works are testament to the Bauhaus where he studied under Walter Peterhans and the dynamism of Buenos Aires where he spent the majority of his career. He was exhibited at MoMA earlier this year in From Bauhaus to Buenos Aires: Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola.
