New Contemporary: Group Exhibition

Michael Hoppen Gallery are delighted to present 'New Contemporary' an exhibition of new or notable editions by photographic artists Sohei Nishino, Hassan Hajjaj, Adam Fuss, Desiree Dolron, Pieter Hugo, Nobuyoshi Araki, Alex Prager and Tim Walker. The show places particular focus on pieces emblematic of the gallery program from 2016 and 2017 with relevance to recent Museum exhibitions and acquisitions, as well as showcasing rare and sold out contemporary editions currently available from the gallery collection. Highlights include Sohei Nishino's Diorama Map San Francisco, 2016 a piece that was recently acquired by SF MoMA, and which is being shown as part of Nishino's solo-exhibition titled 'New Work' at the Museum. Following exhibitions in 2016 at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, SF MoMA and Le Bal, Paris, Nobuyoshi Araki's prominence as a giant of Japanese photography becomes ever more evident as Museum shows for 2017 are announced. We will be exhibiting a fantastic bondage piece from 1991 in New Contemporary, as well as at AIPAD in March.

 

As part of a broader release of work by Tim Walker featuring the dark and poetic fashion of Alexander Mc-Queen, Michael Hoppen Gallery will be displaying the painterly new large format piece titled Xiao Wen Ju, Harleth Kuusik, Yumi Lambert, Nastya Sten, Alexander McQueen 'Romantic Naturalism' collection, London, 2014. A selection of the constructed, colourful portraits by Moroccan artist Hassan Hajjaj will also be presented. Portraying friends, musicians and artists, Hajjaj's engaging pieces combine the visual vocabulary of contemporary fashion photography with Pop Art whilst referencing African studio photography. This year in London his works were featured broadly institutionally in exhibitions such as Made You Look: Dandyism and Black Masculinity at The Photographers' Gallery and Making and Unmaking: An Exhibition curated by Duro Olowu at Camden Arts Centre.
