Bruce Davidson: England / Scotland - 1960

The Michael Hoppen Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of Bruce Davidson’s vintage prints.  These images are from his seminal project ‘England & Scotland 1960,’ and tell the story of Britain during the post war period in the UK’s history. His pictures evoke the spirit of the time through poetic and insightful reflections of the peoples of Britain and their surroundings. 

Davidson’s work informs the viewer of the differences between the country and the city, the wealthy and the common people without passing judgement.  There is a distinctly “British” sensibility to the images and he has managed to capture small eccentricities that inform our culture.

 

Throughout his illustrious career, this American Magnum photographer, (Davidson was made a member in 1959), has received international awards that confirm his stature and the strength and intelligence of his works.

 

The exhibition will be on display at the Michael Hoppen Gallery from Tuesday 12^h of April to Saturday 28^th May 2011.  As a tribute to this extraordinary photographer’s talent there will be three exhibitions on view in London during May.   In addition to the Michael Hoppen Gallery show, Somerset House under the banner of the Sony World Photography Awards will be hosting a large retrospective and the Chris Beetles Gallery will also be hosting an exhibition of Davidson’s work. This is a rare opportunity to view and purchase prints from this highly respected Magnum photographer.
