Spring at Michael Hoppen

We are looking forward to a full and eventful year in 2025, with art fairs in Italy, America and France on the horizon. We are busy curating stands for these fairs, as well as concentrating on new exhibitions at the gallery in Holland Park.

Tate Modern’s major Leigh Bowery retrospective will open at the end of February. We are very much looking forward to seeing what this show has in store for Fergus Greer’s series of portraits of Bowery, which will be at the core of this exciting exhibition. Having led a remarkable and fascinating life, Leigh Bowery never fails to surprise. Even in today’s world, his powerful and absolutely unique presence is still strikingly evident. We hope to see you at our own Fergus Greer show, opening on the 27th of February. Do please keep the evening free.

I was delighted to attend Siân Davey’s latest exhibition at the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol last week. Martin and Siân have curated a wonderful show, and I would urge you to see it if you can. It is full of life and the room resonates with a distinctively photographic passion that Sian seems to be able to conjure up almost without effort. I know this not to be true, but to me it is the true sign of a talented artist – making something so hard appear so easy. I was most moved by a small installation in the middle of the room displaying her Polaroids. These jewel-like unique ‘objects’ shine brightly, and were the focus of much attention. They are different in many ways to her larger, more traditional prints on the walls. Their intimacy and also the material quality of the prints were a real surprise.

An exhibition I am really looking forward to visiting is the American Photography show at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Their collection of photography is less well-known than it should be, and this show will be the first outing for many of the amazing prints in their collection. This will be an important exhibition and one for which I know it will be worth making the journey.

Photography becomes more and more relevant as technology continues to enable us to see what is occurring across the world. However, as I often say, the physical print still trumps (can I still use that word?) the digital rendition every time!

I very much look forward to welcoming you in person at our exhibitions and events over the coming months.

We are thrilled to announce the artist's first major UK survey, which features over a decade of photographs spanning several bodies of work.
