All images in this zine were taken between 1954 and 1970 and published in Akira Sato’s seminal book Women.
Akira Sato was born 30 July 1930 in Tokyo. He is distinguished as one of Japan’s leading fashion photographers, specialising in black-and-white photographs of woman. His collections of portraits combined with elements of fashion are both striking and exotic.
‘He mainly shot fashion in his studio. ‘Soen’, the first and oldest fashion magazine in Japan, was his main client. To express the inner feelings of female figures, he liked to work with fashion models with unique faces, not actresses: Keiko Kishi, Hirolo Matsumoto, Mieko Takahsima and Kyoto Enami all modelled for him. These works were shown in magazines as well as exhibitions.’
- Kikuji Kawada
‘Through the camera, we were fighting, laughing and creating as if we were lovers - it was a wonderful feeling…’
- Mieko Wikstrom (model to Sato)
